This Simple Midge Larva pattern may be one of the easiest flies you ever tie, well, except for the fact that this one is tied on a size 24. Midges are one of only a few aquatic insects that remain active and hatch throughout the winter months.The crowning feature of the Twisted Midge is the extended body. Twisting the abdomen material in a furled fashion gives the fly an upturned, realistic look. Match that with some grizzly hackle legs, a touch of peacock herl for the thorax, and Medallion Sheeting wings, and you have a great midge adult facsimile.Black fly larvae occur in variety of flowing waters from large rivers of moderate current, to the fastest sections of mountain streams. They usually live in dense colonies, although some seem to be territorial and keep others at the distance of the body length.
Most midges, apart from the gall midges (Cecidomyiidae), are aquatic during the larval stage. Some Cecidomyiidae (e.g., the sorghum midge) are significant plant pests. The larvae of some Chironomidae contain haemoglobin and are sometimes referred to as bloodworms.In the midge, a type of fly, the bisexual phase occurs in adults, and parthenogenesis takes place among the larvae (paedogenesis). Adult female midges deposit fertilized eggs, from which hatch larvae whose ovaries develop while the rest of the body retains a larval form.
